Sliding doors were used as far back as the Roman Empire was still around. This is known because of the findings
from archaeological digs around Pompeii, Italy. With wardrobe sliding doors, there are two different kinds, one is
the doors are hung from the top and two they can have a bottom rolling system.
In the modern wardrobe sliding doors the most often system used is the ‘top hung’ system. There are two trolley
hangers at the top of the door, usually running on a concealed track. Most of the weight of the door is with the
hangers, thus the doors are easily moved back and forth.
Each end of the wardrobe sliding doors is a track stopper to take the impact if the door is slammed. Kids will
slam the wardrobe sliding doors back and forth with a little force. The track stoppers will keep the doors on the
hanger. Wardrobe sliding doors that are top hung have a maximum weight limit per trolley.
Wardrobe sliding doors that are top hung are hung at the top from two points. So they need additional guides at
the bottom to keep the door from swinging outwards. One of the most common one are the ‘clear threshold guiding’,
it is fixed to the floor. The plastic guide is about sixty millimeters wide. A groove will be cut at the bottom of
the door which the door runs over the guide, preventing the door from swinging out.
At times when installing wardrobe sliding doors the top hung method cannot be used. The weight of the doors just
cannot be supported correctly. So a bottom rolling system is used. This type of system for the wardrobe sliding
doors has two rollers at the bottom of the door track, and two guides at the top of the running channel. Since the
weight of the wardrobe sliding door is on the two bottom wheels, more force is used to move the door.
The mechanisms of these wardrobe sliding doors are safe. The rollers have two safety locks that prevent the
doors from jumping track.
There are so many different styles of wardrobe sliding doors, the list is almost endless. From solid wood to
veneer wood, painted, metal or glass. Maybe one with mirrors is always nice. The choice is yours. Depending on
where the wardrobe sliding doors are to be put, some are even made of plastic.
The places one can find wardrobe sliding doors aplenty. They re found in kitchens, hotel rooms, business
offices, bedrooms, living rooms, etc. there are even websites that will cut and have wardrobe sliding doors
delivered to you. But if you go that route, be sure the measurements are correct. The old adage ‘measure twice cut
once’ is very good to adhere too.
Many will not accept returns, so be very careful ordering online. When ordering wardrobe sliding doors at a
store, you will still have to take them the measurements, or some will send a quailified person out to measure for
you. Of course the prices will vary, depending on the size of the doors and what you want them made out of.
